WJC Leadership Congratulates Jewish President-Elect Nicolas Sarkozy

    NEW YORK, May 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Edgar M. Bronfman, President
of the World Jewish Congress, has written to Nicolas Sarkozy congratulating
him on his election as President of France.
    A copy of the letter will be formally presented to Francois Delattre,
Consul General of France, at a meeting of the World Jewish Congress
American Section in New York tomorrow.

    WORLD JEWISH CONGRESS
    Dear Mr. President,
    On behalf of the World Jewish Congress and its Steering Committee,
which is meeting in New York today, we wish you a heartfelt congratulations
on winning the Presidency of France.
    The free and democratic societies are today confronted by tremendous
challenges. These challenges threaten the basic tenets of our society --
tolerance, the rule of law, the freedom of thought, speech and religion.
They challenge not only the fabric of our societies and their economic
stability, but the whole international order which we have managed to
carefully construct after the two big wars of the 20th century.

    The Jewish people, which has lost so much, remains on the front line of
efforts to preserve the values needed to prevent a repeat of the disasters
