PHILADELPHIA, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- A joint ceremony by the Korean
War Memorial and Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial honoring the war
dead from Iraq and Afghanistan will be held Friday July 27 at 6 p.m. at
Penn's Landing.
The ceremony, which will be held at the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans
Memorial at Front and Spruce streets, will feature the reading of those
lost in the conflict over the past month.
This is the second such observance. The first one was held at the
Korean War Memorial on June 29. The two organizations responsible for the
Memorials agreed that on the last weekend of each month, a similar reading
will be held accompanied by a lowering of the flag to half mast at both
Memorials for the next two days. The brief ceremony will alternate at each
Memorial with the Aug. 24 ceremony to be held at the same time at the
Korean War Memorial across the street.
William J. Kelly, president of the Korean memorial, and Terry A.
Williamson, president of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Advisory Fund issued the following statement:
"Although the public is clearly supportive of our troops abroad, the
Boards of both Memorials felt strongly that we need to recognize in a more
formal way the sacrifice of the men and women in this now prolonged
conflict. What better way to do that than at the Philadelphia memorials
dedicated to the sacrifice in the two previous wars conducted by our
nation?"
The Korean War Memorial Board came up with the idea after it became
concerned that the remains of those war dead returning home were not
receiving the public recognition that was warranted and decided to lower
the flags at the Memorial to half staff throughout the Memorial Day
weekend.
