Memorial is Nation's First Permanent Public Tribute To Three Million-Plus
Living Disabled American Veterans, Including 53,000 From Conflicts In Iraq,
Afghanistan
DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Donald Trump, long a
champion of armed forces personnel and veterans, has again demonstrated his
patriotism in a "big" way. Lois Pope, Co-Founder and Chairwoman of The
Disabled Veterans' LIFE Memorial Foundation, today announced that Mr. Trump
has made a significant gift to make it possible for a large American flag
to be erected and fly permanently at the American Veterans Disabled for
Life Memorial in Washington, D.C.
"This Memorial will honor America's unsung heroes - the millions of
disabled American veterans who sacrificed parts of their bodies, and in
some cases their minds, in defense of freedom and our democratic ideals,"
said Mrs. Pope. "Donald's generous gift shows a great understanding and
appreciation for these courageous men and women, and the sacrifices that
they, and their families, have made and continue to make on behalf of this
country. He is truly a great and patriotic American."
The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial - the nation's first
and only permanent public tribute to the three million living disabled
American veterans, including the 53,000 who have been disabled in some way
in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the countless
thousands who have since died - is being built on a two-plus acre site
adjacent to the National Mall, across from the U.S. Botanic Garden and
within full view of the U.S. Capitol Building. One of the goals of the
Memorial, scheduled for dedication in 2010, will be to educate this and
future generations that cost of freedom comes at a great human price.
Donald Trump, who became familiar with the armed forces philosophy
while receiving his junior and high school education at the New York
Military Academy, is the co-chairman and builder of the New York Vietnam
Veterans Memorial Fund, among his many philanthropic endeavors on behalf of
America's veterans.
A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, he
is renowned today for his real estate empire spanning across the U.S., from
Palm Beach to New York, and throughout the world.
He is popularly known by his nickname "The Donald," and also known for
the catchphrase "You're Fired" from his hit network television program,
"The Apprentice."
"The sacrifice America's disabled veterans have made is unimaginable to
me, as I'm sure it is to Donald," said Mrs. Pope. "We - all Americans -
have a solemn obligation to ensure that these sacrifices are never
marginalized or forgotten. Donald's gift, along with the many others that
come from Americans from all walks of life, represent a sterling
affirmation of our commitment to honor these sacrifices. Indeed, this
Memorial which will stand as an eternal testament to the gratitude that we
as Americans owe to our disabled veterans."
