NEW YORK, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Jewish
Committee is concerned by a comment regarding Hezbollah attributed to Gov.
Mitt Romney.
"Hezbollah is on the U.S. government's list of terrorist organizations
for sound reasons," said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. "Hezbollah
may have seats in the Lebanese Parliament and may run a network of social
service organizations, but it is hardly a model for any peace-loving
nation.
"Hezbollah is fundamentally a well-armed terror organization, sponsored
by Iran, committed to the destruction of Israel, to attacking Jews
worldwide, and to targeting the U.S. and other Western nations," said
Harris. "Hundreds of American, French and Argentine citizens, among others,
have been killed in Hezbollah-sponsored attacks. That it provides social
services is, above all, a transparent ploy to win the hearts and minds of
Lebanese for its incendiary ideology.
"We are confident that the governor and his staff appreciate the threat
Hezbollah continues to pose to U.S. interests in the Middle East, and
beyond. We would urge anyone interested in the true nature of Hezbollah to
read its own chilling charter," Harris said.
