AARP to Give $100,000 Award to a Top Philadelphia Public High School
     AARP Looking for Schools That Connect Generations and Communities

    PHILADELPHIA, May 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AARP today announced
the creation of The Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Award, which will donate
$100,000 to a Philadelphia public high school in acknowledgment of a
program that connects generations or fosters greater civic engagement among
students and their communities. This award was developed to honor AARP's
founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, and in recognition of her achievements
AARP is offering the Legacy Award as part of its 50th anniversary
celebration.

    "As we draw near to AARP's 50th anniversary, we believe it is important
to celebrate our commitment to future generations and our organization's
historic ties to the education community," says AARP Pennsylvania State
Director Dick Chevrefils. "Dr. Andrus developed innovative programs that
served the interests of her students and the local community. We are
pleased to continue the wonderful works fostered by her at a local
Philadelphia public high school."
    The Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Award is being offered to Public high
schools in designated "AARP Celebration Cities" across the country. The
celebration cities, which will be the focal point of AARP's 50th
anniversary activities, include Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago,
Houston, and Washington, DC.
    Prior to founding AARP, Dr. Andrus achieved broad recognition as a
creative and innovative public high school educator. She was the first
woman appointed to lead a public secondary high school in California, where
she developed and implemented a variety of innovative programs that served
the interest of both the students and the community.
    All entries are due by October 1, 2007. Applications and additional

    Entries will be judged by a blue ribbon panel of nationally known
